Launching BhutanInfo

Thimphu, 3 Dec. 2009: The National Statistics Bureau (NSB) and the UN system in Bhutan officially launched BhutanInfo on 03 December 2009 at Hotel Tashi Taj in Thimphu.

BhutanInfo is a database tool for advocacy and monitoring of socio-economic development goals. It is a customized version of DevInfo, a tool for organizing, storing and presenting data in a uniform way to facilitate data sharing among the government agencies, international and other development partners.  BhutanInfo is a dissemination tool with features to produce tables, graphs and maps for inclusion in reports, presentations and advocacy materials.

Standard indicators including Millennium Development Goal indicators and other user-defined indicators on 10th Five-year Plan and Sectoral goals are covered under this database. This tool is accessible both as a desktop application as well as on the web. DevInfo is an improved and upgraded version of ChildInfo which was developed by UNICEF to monitor the progress of World Summit of Children 2002. Currently 134 countries with more than 24,000 trained users are using DevInfo in their planning and monitoring of their national development plans and MDGs.

Information and data in the era of globalization is important for programming and project management and also in monitoring and evaluation of development plans. Nationally owned and harmonized cross-sectoral information management system that generates quality data is an important step for achieving MDGs and their use in policy, strategy and programme formulation. And BhutanInfo, as a powerful tool, will contribute to greater MDG awareness and knowledge at country level among a wide range of stakeholders.

BhutanInfo was customized with technical and financial support mainly from UNICEF. The current database incorporates framework for the 10th Five Year Plan, UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), SAARC Development Goals (SDGs), Vision 2020 and the MDGs. There are currently 620 indicators available which are further disaggregated to 1626 in total. The database, which is the first comprehensive national database, supports geographical location to the level of gewogs while data are available till Dzongkhag level. In total the current database has 16,262 data values and incorporates the most recent maps till the geog level. General users do not require any skills or knowledge of GIS software or other mapping tools to generate thematic maps using the available dataset.

The national database will be maintained by NSB and will be periodically updated depending on the availability of new datasets and also based on needs and directives from planners and decision makers like GNHC. NSB in collaboration with relevant agency like GNHC will work towards institutionalization of BhutanInfo within the government organizations. NSB have already decided to maintain dzongkhag and geog profiles data on BhutanInfo platform. The Dzongkhag Statistical Officers (DSO) will be responsible to maintain their respective dzongkhag database with periodic updating. Individual sectors, ministries and agencies will be supported by NSB with assistance from UNICEF and the UN in terms of capacity building and technical support. User training for all sectors, NGOs and development partners will be rolled out by NSB with support of the UN.
